Superstar learners ⭐

During the half term, some of our friends in Nursery have enjoyed looking at and comparing baby photos of themselves and their families.

They have been fascinated to learn all about how photography has changed and have asked their grown-ups lots of inquisitive questions!

Well done Darcey and Ida for being so motivated and completing your learning challenges during the half term! ⭐

Ida has also been doing lots of reading recently and has shared some of her favourite places to read... the swing looks super comfy!

Enjoy your weekend everyone! 🌈🌞

Week 10 learning

Happy half term Nursery!

Thank you for being so amazing and completing lots of the learning challenges that I have been setting over the last few weeks. As you have been working extra hard, we have decided to give you a rest from our usual learning and give you some fun challenges to complete this week!

Look at us!

This week we would like you and your grown-ups to find some old photographs of you and your family. These photographs might be in albums, in picture frames or on electronic devices. We would like you to look at pictures of you as a baby/toddler and pictures of your grown-ups at around the same age too. Here are some questions to talk about...

Do you look different in the pictures?
How have you changed?
What can you do now that you couldn't do when you were a baby?
How old do you think you were?
How old are your grown-ups?
What is happening in the pictures?

Here are some baby pictures of the grown-ups in the foundation unit.

Can you guess who everyone is?
What is everyone doing?
We will post and tell you the answers on Friday!

Grown-ups - Ask the children how they would take a picture. Now, we would like you to talk to the children about the process of taking a photograph when you were little (even Miss Woods had to wait for photographs to be developed!) Taking the picture on a camera, waiting until they had all been taken and then taking the film to be developed, which took a long time! Explain that it wasn't possible to take a picture and look at it straight away - until digital cameras were made,

You could show the children pictures of different types of camera and how they are different to the ways we take pictures today.

'Get caught reading'

We know how much Nursery love to read and share stories, so this week we are setting you a challenge… where is the most interesting place you can read a story? Ask your grown-ups to take a picture of you reading your book and send it to our class email!

We can't wait to see all of your wonderful pictures!!

While we can't hug - a story for children.

Hi Nursery,

I have found a lovely story which I think you might like to watch with your grown-ups. It’s all about a hedgehog and a tortoise who just want to hug. 🤗

Click on the picture to watch.

I hope you enjoy watching it.

I wonder if you could send me any pictures of what you have done to make someone smile?🥰

Love,

Miss Woods 🌈

Week 9 learning

Hi Nursery 🌈

Another week has passed by and I would just like to say that I am so proud of you all for completing your learning challenges – you are so motivated and resilient!

It is a pleasure to receive lots of lovely pictures from your grown-ups and I look forward to them each week. Keep sending them in and look out for the Superstar learner blog post each week where you will be able to see what your friends have been getting up to at home.

Email pictures/videos to:

 nursery@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk

*We have found a fantastic reading/phonic resource called ‘Reading Eggs’ which we think you will love! There is an option for your grown-ups to sign up to this online resource for a three week free trial by clicking on this link - https://readingeggs.co.uk/

You can also download this as an app on your devices! Have a look and let us know what you think*

Mr Bear and Jenie Jigsaw have had to think really hard this week as they know how good you are with these challenges now. They have had to turn their brainboxes onto superpower mode for this week’s challenges!

Here are your challenges for the week:

You could begin your days by singing the ‘Days of the week’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY

You could also talk to your grown-ups about the weather and if you are feeling up to a super challenge – name the day that it was yesterday and the day it will be tomorrow!

You could also begin each of your phonic sessions with our ‘Jolly Jingles’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euxN7LGOoLc or ‘Phonics Song 2’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs on YouTube.

For the Maths sessions you could sing any of our number or shape songs to warm up your brainboxes.

Monday:

Phonics  Today your warm up is to have a go at clapping the syllables in your name e.g. if your name was Mabel is would be 2 claps, if your name was Ben is would be just 1 clap and so on.

Following on from your warm up, you will need a saucepan and a wooden spoon or something similar. Today you are going to play saucepan syllables. You could gather a range of objects from your home and use these to bang the syllables on the saucepan e.g.

Cup – 1 bang

Teddy – 2 bangs

Dinosaur – 3 bangs

Television – 4 bangs.

Challenge: Which item did you find that had the most syllables? Email me with your results!

Maths-  In our Maths sessions this week, we are going to explore pattern. For your first challenge this week, you are going to use items that you have at home to make patterns. See the picture below for help.

Challenge: Can you count how many of each item you have used? Which item did you start with? Which item have you ended with? Can you verbalise the pattern e.g. “orange, biscuit, orange, biscuit, orange, biscuit”

Tuesday:

Phonics – after you have sung one of our phonics songs to warm up, your grown-up will need to have a bag prepared with some items inside. These items can be household items such as: cup, fork, ball, hat, car.

Take a look at the picture below to help. Your grown-up will put their hand into the bag and sound out an item that they have chosen so for example your grown-up might say,

“I have a d-o-g”         or     “I have a s–p–oo-n.”

See if you can guess what the item is! If you do, you can keep the item – good luck!

Challenge: You could have a go at sounding out an item for your grown-up to guess what is inside the bag!

*Alternatively, you could also play this game by describing an object which is hidden inside the bag or you could give your child the initial sound of the object to see if they can guess what it is.

Maths- Today you are going to continue looking at pattern but today you are going to need some paint and an item like an apple or a potato cut in half.

Can you make a repeating pattern? You could do this by either using one item and change the colour e.g. red, blue, red, blue, red, blue or you could use two items like potato, carrot, potato, carrot, potato, carrot. Good luck!

Challenge: Ask your grown-up to send me some pictures of your patterns – I can’t wait to see them!

Wednesday:

Phonics – Today we are going to be exploring rhythm and rhyme. On Phonics Play, there is a game called ‘Cake Bake’ where you have to identify words which rhyme with the picture on the bowl. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/CakeBake.html see if you can have a go at matching the rhyming words and saying them altogether in a string e.g. cat, hat, bat, mat.

Challenge:  Choose two items that you know rhyme and draw them onto a piece of paper. Can you have a go at writing the initial sound or the word to match?

Maths- Continuing on with pattern, you need to find some items which have colours in your house today. The best item to use would be Lego or wooden blocks to create your pattern. Take a look at the picture below to help create your pattern.

If you wanted to explore pattern outside, you could always make a pattern using natural resources such as sticks, stones or leaves.

Challenge: Can you count how many of each item you have used and practise writing these numbers?

Thursday:

Phonics –  Using your log in for Oxford Owl, choose a new story to read. Look at the front cover and guess what you think might happen in the story. Can you spot any letter sounds that you know in the title?

Can you spot the characters in the story, how might they be feeling/why?

Challenge: Can you recall the events that happened in the story? Tell your grown-up your favourite part of the story – you could even draw a picture to show your favourite part if you want to!

*Alternatively, you could go onto the Reading Eggs app and explore some learning on there*

Maths- Today you are going to finish looking at patterns by completing an online game on Top Marks.

Fun Fridays:

Well done for completing the tricky challenges for Phonics and Maths this week Nursery – I hope you have a super fun Friday and I cannot wait until we can share those fun times together again!

Creative time:

This week, your challenge is to get creative in the kitchen! I thought it would be a super fun idea if you could have a go at making items with your food. Make sure you are using the equipment in your kitchen safely and always work with a grown-up’s supervision! You could make a flower, a caterpillar or a house. The possibilities are endless! Have a look at the pictures below for some inspiration – be as creative as you like and make sure you ask your grown-up to send a photograph of your finished product to me!

PE time:

Today, your PE challenge is to complete each activity for each letter in your name. If you have a short name, you could always add on the activities for your surname! Have fun – I would love to see some videos of your exercise!

Superstar learners ⭐

Happy Friday everyone!

I have chosen to add all the fabulous pictures that I have been sent into a video for this week. I hope you enjoy it!

Have a lovely weekend and stay safe.

Week 8 learning

Hi Nursery,

I am still missing you all lots but I am loving to see all of the wonderful activities and learning that you have been doing at home with your grown-ups. You are all making me very proud!

Don’t forget to ask your grown-ups to email pictures of your learning and activities to nursery@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk and I can share these on the blog so your friends can see what you have been doing too!

Mr Bear and Jenie Jigsaw are still having fun setting you the weekly challenges – they hope you enjoy this week’s!

Monday:

Phonics  Warm up by singing the ‘Jolly jingles’ song on YouTube (you don’t have to sing them all in one go, you could sing a few each day)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euxN7LGOoLc

Today, you are going to need some letter sounds, some objects which begin with each sound and a plastic bottle. Look at the picture below to help your grown-ups to see how to set this game up.

When you spin your bottle and it lands on a sound, can you name the sound and something that begins with that sound? It can be the item which you have put with the sound, or something else you can think of.

Challenge: Can you form the sound as the bottle lands on them? Challenge yourself even further and have a go at sounding out the word such as:     h     a     t      (you could also write each word if you like)

Maths-

Today your tricky challenge is to feed some hungry shape monsters! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/shape-monsters

Ask your grown-ups to click on the link above and have a go at matching the monsters to their shapes.

Challenge: Can you name each shape as it comes onto the screen? How many sides does that shape have? How many corners?

Tuesday:

Phonics – log on to phonicsplay.co.uk. Play flashcard speed sounds (phase 2) and practise saying all of the sounds. How many could you remember? Are you getting faster at naming each sound?

Last week, your Tuesday challenge was to make your name on a paper chain. Today’s challenge is similar and you will need to ask your grown up to write your name on a piece of paper. Ask them to then cut it into single sounds ready for you to piece back together like a jigsaw.

Challenge: Can you form each letter in your name correctly now? If you can do this confidently, ask your grown up to challenge you to piece together the letters in your surname.

Maths- Warm your maths brains up by singing our ‘2D shape song’ song with our favourite character – Big Walrus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEbRDtCAFdU

Today you are going to have a go at making your own shape animal. You could use pens to draw the shapes, you could use paper cut into shapes and stick them onto paper or you could find objects to draw around which will help you to make a shape.

Look at the pictures below to help.

Challenge: Can you count how many of each shape you have used and write this number down?

Wednesday:

Phonics – Sing the phonics song 2 on YouTube and see if you can spot any of the sounds in your name when they come onto the screen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs

Mr Bear and Jenie need your help today! They have been sent some pictures and words but the words have some sounds missing – do you think you could help them to work out the missing sound?

_ o g

t a _

_ u n

r _ t

c o _

p _ g

_ e t

Challenge: You could choose one of the pictures and have a go at drawing your own version and writing what it is.

Maths- Make sure you have your best counting voices ready, Big Walrus will be checking to see if you can use your fingers to help you count as you sing along to his song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Ajq682yrA

We are going to be exploring shape again and how the shape of an item or its properties can help it to roll. Can you ask your grown-up to help you make a ‘homemade ramp’?

Experiment which of your toys will travel the fastest down the ramp. Which will travel the slowest? Can you predict this before trying it out?

You could use language such as: furthest, longest, quickest, speed, heavy and light.

Thursday:

Phonics   Using your log in for Oxford Owl, choose a new story to read.

Maths- Warm up your brains by choosing either the Big Walrus or Macarena counting song!

Gather together 10 items (more if you would like a challenge) and the same amount of pegs. Your grown-up is going to show you any number of items and your challenge is to attach that many pegs to either a piece of paper/cardboard/string. Practise this until you have had a go at pegging a few different totals.

Challenge: Have a look at how many pegs you have secured to your paper/cardboard/string. How many pegs would you have if one was taken away? How many would you have if you added another peg?

Fun Fridays:

Well done for completing the tricky challenges for Phonics and Maths this week Nursery – I hope you have a super fun Friday and I cannot wait until we can share those fun times together again!

Creative time:

This week, your challenge is to have a go at making your own wish tree. When I was in school this week, Miss Elliott, Mrs Ellender and I had a fabulous time making a wish tree with the children. You will need to collect some sticks to decorate. You could wrap them in wool/string/ribbon or you could paint them – be as creative as you like! When you have decorated your sticks, ask your grown-up to help you make a tag to attach onto your wish tree. Each member of your family could add a tag if they would like. On the tag, write down something that you are excited to be able to do again or are wishing for. Some of the children in school wished that they could see their family soon, or that they could come back to school to see all of their friends. Don’t forget to take a picture of your wish tree, including your wishes for me to see.

PE time:

Today, your PE challenge is to walk the plank. Ask your grown-up to lay out some string or use chalks to draw a straight line on the ground outside. Your challenge is to balance along this line using your arms to help you get from one end to the other. Can you make it to the end without falling into the ocean?
