Week 9 learning

Hi Nursery 🌈

Another week has passed by and I would just like to say that I am so proud of you all for completing your learning challenges – you are so motivated and resilient!

It is a pleasure to receive lots of lovely pictures from your grown-ups and I look forward to them each week. Keep sending them in and look out for the Superstar learner blog post each week where you will be able to see what your friends have been getting up to at home.

Email pictures/videos to:

 nursery@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk

*We have found a fantastic reading/phonic resource called ‘Reading Eggs’ which we think you will love! There is an option for your grown-ups to sign up to this online resource for a three week free trial by clicking on this link - https://readingeggs.co.uk/

You can also download this as an app on your devices! Have a look and let us know what you think*

Mr Bear and Jenie Jigsaw have had to think really hard this week as they know how good you are with these challenges now. They have had to turn their brainboxes onto superpower mode for this week’s challenges!

Here are your challenges for the week:

You could begin your days by singing the ‘Days of the week’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY

You could also talk to your grown-ups about the weather and if you are feeling up to a super challenge – name the day that it was yesterday and the day it will be tomorrow!

You could also begin each of your phonic sessions with our ‘Jolly Jingles’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euxN7LGOoLc or ‘Phonics Song 2’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs on YouTube.

For the Maths sessions you could sing any of our number or shape songs to warm up your brainboxes.

Monday:

Phonics  Today your warm up is to have a go at clapping the syllables in your name e.g. if your name was Mabel is would be 2 claps, if your name was Ben is would be just 1 clap and so on.

Following on from your warm up, you will need a saucepan and a wooden spoon or something similar. Today you are going to play saucepan syllables. You could gather a range of objects from your home and use these to bang the syllables on the saucepan e.g.

Cup – 1 bang

Teddy – 2 bangs

Dinosaur – 3 bangs

Television – 4 bangs.

Challenge: Which item did you find that had the most syllables? Email me with your results!

Maths-  In our Maths sessions this week, we are going to explore pattern. For your first challenge this week, you are going to use items that you have at home to make patterns. See the picture below for help.

Challenge: Can you count how many of each item you have used? Which item did you start with? Which item have you ended with? Can you verbalise the pattern e.g. “orange, biscuit, orange, biscuit, orange, biscuit”

Tuesday:

Phonics – after you have sung one of our phonics songs to warm up, your grown-up will need to have a bag prepared with some items inside. These items can be household items such as: cup, fork, ball, hat, car.

Take a look at the picture below to help. Your grown-up will put their hand into the bag and sound out an item that they have chosen so for example your grown-up might say,

“I have a d-o-g”         or     “I have a s–p–oo-n.”

See if you can guess what the item is! If you do, you can keep the item – good luck!

Challenge: You could have a go at sounding out an item for your grown-up to guess what is inside the bag!

*Alternatively, you could also play this game by describing an object which is hidden inside the bag or you could give your child the initial sound of the object to see if they can guess what it is.

Maths- Today you are going to continue looking at pattern but today you are going to need some paint and an item like an apple or a potato cut in half.

Can you make a repeating pattern? You could do this by either using one item and change the colour e.g. red, blue, red, blue, red, blue or you could use two items like potato, carrot, potato, carrot, potato, carrot. Good luck!

Challenge: Ask your grown-up to send me some pictures of your patterns – I can’t wait to see them!

Wednesday:

Phonics – Today we are going to be exploring rhythm and rhyme. On Phonics Play, there is a game called ‘Cake Bake’ where you have to identify words which rhyme with the picture on the bowl. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/CakeBake.html see if you can have a go at matching the rhyming words and saying them altogether in a string e.g. cat, hat, bat, mat.

Challenge:  Choose two items that you know rhyme and draw them onto a piece of paper. Can you have a go at writing the initial sound or the word to match?

Maths- Continuing on with pattern, you need to find some items which have colours in your house today. The best item to use would be Lego or wooden blocks to create your pattern. Take a look at the picture below to help create your pattern.

If you wanted to explore pattern outside, you could always make a pattern using natural resources such as sticks, stones or leaves.

Challenge: Can you count how many of each item you have used and practise writing these numbers?

Thursday:

Phonics –  Using your log in for Oxford Owl, choose a new story to read. Look at the front cover and guess what you think might happen in the story. Can you spot any letter sounds that you know in the title?

Can you spot the characters in the story, how might they be feeling/why?

Challenge: Can you recall the events that happened in the story? Tell your grown-up your favourite part of the story – you could even draw a picture to show your favourite part if you want to!

*Alternatively, you could go onto the Reading Eggs app and explore some learning on there*

Maths- Today you are going to finish looking at patterns by completing an online game on Top Marks.

Fun Fridays:

Well done for completing the tricky challenges for Phonics and Maths this week Nursery – I hope you have a super fun Friday and I cannot wait until we can share those fun times together again!

Creative time:

This week, your challenge is to get creative in the kitchen! I thought it would be a super fun idea if you could have a go at making items with your food. Make sure you are using the equipment in your kitchen safely and always work with a grown-up’s supervision! You could make a flower, a caterpillar or a house. The possibilities are endless! Have a look at the pictures below for some inspiration – be as creative as you like and make sure you ask your grown-up to send a photograph of your finished product to me!

PE time:

Today, your PE challenge is to complete each activity for each letter in your name. If you have a short name, you could always add on the activities for your surname! Have fun – I would love to see some videos of your exercise!
