Week 11 learning

Hi Nursery,

I hope you enjoyed your half term and got up to lots of exciting activities at home!

I hope you found it fun trying to guess who the baby pictures belonged to for your challenge last week! If you have any pictures of you reading in extraordinary places, we would love to see them!

Email to:

*For some of our phonics activities next week, please save up plastic bottle lids from your empty milk cartons or bottles of pop and water. Please also save any glass bottles you have ready for some musical activities next week! *

Mr Bear and Jenie Jigsaw had a very relaxing half term and spent lots of time in the garden, playing with their toys and eating ice-cream! I told them that they need to turn their brain boxes back on to think of some great challenges for you this week, so here’s hoping they’ve done a good job!

Here are your challenges for the week:

You could begin your days by singing the ‘Days of the week’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY

You could also talk to your grown-ups about the weather and if you are feeling up to a super challenge – name the day that it was yesterday and the day it will be tomorrow!

You could also begin each of your phonic sessions with our ‘Jolly Jingles’ song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euxN7LGOoLc or ‘Phonics Song 2’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs on YouTube.

For the Maths sessions you could sing any of our number or shape songs to warm up your brainboxes.

Monday:

Phonics  Today your challenge is to go on a hunt around your house and garden. How many objects can you find that begin with the letter sound s?

You could collect as many objects as you can or ask your grown-up to write down all of the things you find. See if you can find 10 items. Ask your grown-up to email me with a picture or a list of all the things you found and I will see if I can find the same number of items in my house too!

Challenge: Practise writing the letter sound ‘s’ in three different sizes. First, try and write it REALLY BIG, then try a medium size and lastly, can you write it tiny?

Maths-

We are going to be exploring number this week in our maths challenges. Today’s challenge is a good one to warm up your brain boxes and a good way to exercise too! Ask your grown up to place number cards on each step of your stairs. When you climb the stairs, can you name each number?

Challenge: Can you say the numbers on the way back down the stairs too? (Sit on your bottom on the way down to make it easier and safer). Which was the biggest number you saw? Which was the smallest number?

Tuesday:

Phonics – Today, your grown-up will need a sheet of paper with sounds written on, like the picture below. They are going to shout out a sound and you are going to find it on your paper. When you have found it, can you draw a circle around it? If you find all of the sounds, you can shout BINGO!!

Challenge: Your grown-up could ask you to find something beginning with one of those sounds e.g. “Can you tell me something beginning with t?”

Maths- Just like in our Phonics challenge, ask your grown-up to write numbers onto a piece of paper this time. When they shout out a number, can you find it? Shout BINGO when you have found all of your numbers – good luck!

Challenge: Can you find numbers 1 and 2, how many would you have altogether if you added these? You could use objects to help, place one object to one side, and two objects at the other. When you move them altogether in the middle, how many do you have?

Wednesday:

Phonics – For your phonics challenge today, you will need a muffin tray or a few different bowls/plates. Look at the picture below to help. (You could write the letter sounds on small pieces of paper also)

You will also need some pennies to throw. Your challenge is to throw a penny to one of the sounds – when your penny lands, name the sound it has landed on.

Challenge:  Can you make up the words cat, dog, sun, pig, hen with the letter sounds you have?

Maths- Keep your muffin tray or bowls out, but this time you are going to have numbers instead of letter sounds in the compartments (see picture below). Can you use pasta or cereal to add the correct number?

Challenge: Can you count all of your pasta/cereal pieces together and add up how many you had?

Thursday:

Phonics   Using your log in for Oxford Owl, choose a new story to read. Look at the front cover and guess what you think might happen in the story. Can you spot any letter sounds that you know in the title?

Can you spot the characters in the story, how might they be feeling/why?

Challenge: Can you recall the events that happened in the story? Tell your grown-up your favourite part of the story – you could even draw a picture to show your favourite part if you want to!

*Alternatively, you could go onto the Reading Eggs app and explore some learning on there or choose a story book from home which you have enjoyed reading and discuss the same questions with your grown-ups*

Maths- To finish off our number learning for this week, Mr Bear and Jenie Jigsaw would like you to make a number line. Can you use your number cards to make a number line from 0 to 10?

*The caterpillar number line has a number missing, can you spot which one it is?*

Challenge: Can you add any other numbers to your number line? Which number comes after 10?

Fun Fridays:

Well done for completing the tricky challenges for Phonics and Maths this week Nursery – I hope you have a super fun Friday and I cannot wait until we can share those fun times together again!

Creative time:

As I know that lots of you enjoyed making pictures with your snacks a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would be nice for you to prepare a snack, meal or dessert with your grown-up in the kitchen. You don’t have to do this today; you could do it any day in the week. Please send any pictures of you helping and with your end product – I can’t wait to see some amazing creations!

PE time:

I have found some physical challenges for you to have a go at today. There are two challenges so start with challenge 1 and have a go at challenge 2 if you are feeling super strong and flexible! Send in any pictures of you completing your exercise, we would love to see them!
